A Level 4 finish coats the tape, seams, and fasteners with joint compound but leaves the field of the board bare, which is fine for flat and matte paints. A Level 5 goes further by skimming the entire surface so compound and paper share the same texture and absorbency. That uniformity is why Level 5 is the standard for satin, semi-gloss, and enamel finishes that would otherwise reveal every seam.

We start from a properly taped and three-coat Level 4 base, then trowel or roll and knock down a thin, uniform skim of topping compound across the whole surface.
