Perfect walls, protected homes

We're a family-owned residential drywall company, and pretty much every house we walk into around here is a single-family home. A lot of them are the older Westchester places off Yonkers Avenue and up through Crestwood, where the walls have settled a little and nothing's dead flat anymore. Finishing a wall comes down to two coats, each with its own job. The first coat does the hiding: it locks down all the loose bits and fills the low spots, and the final coat is the one that shows. The mistakes almost always come from rushing one of those two, because if you hurry the first coat you drag debris up into your top layer, and if you hurry the final coat you get ridges you'll see the second the afternoon light comes across the wall. So we take our time on both. We hang and finish 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch gypsum board, tape with mesh and paper, and sand to a smooth Level-4 or a glass-smooth Level-5 finish, paint-ready when we leave.

The other half of the job is respecting that this is your home and not a job site. We mask and cover the floors and furniture, seal off the room with plastic, run vacuum-assisted sanding, and clean up before we go, because a wall isn't really finished if you've left the homeowner a week of dust to deal with. It still surprises a lot of homeowners how much a plain skim coat can do; folks assume a wavy, patched-up wall or a tired finished basement has to be torn out, when nine times out of ten a good skim over sound plaster gets you a flat, paint-ready wall for a fraction of the cost.
